I just finished this book last night and it is incredible. I'm an engineer/introvert who's been learning to bury my emotions my whole life. Reading this book has been a total reset to my internal dialogue. The 1-star reviews are critical that the author doesn't back up her claims with studies, and they are 100% correct. However I don't know how you conduct a double-blind study on what anger/fear are trying to tell you. As I read the book I had a couple of thoughts bouncing around my head: "how can she possibly back up these claims" and almost simultaneously "she's a GENIUS". The bottom line is what she says just fits. The hardest one to come to terms with for me was the chapter on hate but eventually after thorough examination and reflection I had to conclude that she was right. Yes the first half of the book is repetitive but as other reviewers have suggested I believe it is necessary to help break the lifelong conditioning we've had on ignoring our emotions. The author says it's okay to jump around the book a bit but I read it straight through and recommend you do the same.Product details

The Language of Emotions What Your Feelings Are Trying to Tell You Large Print 16pt Karla McLaren Books Reviews
This is the best book on emotions I have read and I have read many. I also work with emotional issues with clients and though there are many good authors and techniques for working with emotions, this truly is the best in my opinion.
This book and these tools are not for everyone though. One must put forth the effort, learn the skills and put them into practice and then they work. Beautifully.
The author goes through explaining a lot more than many will be willing to read especially if one just want to get to the tools. If this is the case, the reader can fast forward to the chapter "Building your Raft" and then go to the chapters on the specific emotions. Those later chapters can be read repeatedly as one gets to really know the emotions and the interaction between emotions.
The best message of this book is "there is no bad emotion." All emotions are there to serve us, to help us, to get us to see something that we need to see for our overall benefit. Every time we push an emotion down and refuse to allow it to move through us, refuse to acknowledge it, we hurt ourselves and those around us.
this book is amazing I had got it from the library at first then I had to order it so I can make notes and high light things this book has given me clarity on so many things I been seeking answers to thank you I recommend it to anyone !!!!!
Got the language of emotions cards in a human growth and development psych class in grad school, quickly bought the book because they're that good. Haven't finished the book, but it's one I'll come back to. I mostly skip around and read a bit on an emotion I'm looking for insight on and may or may not finish it's chapter, but worth the investment, great book.
"The Language of Emotions" is a in depth look at various emotions and how to deal with them in a way that resolves the underlying issues. Extremely profound and life changing.
I am totally in love with Karla McLaren! I had seen that Linda Kahanov kept referring to Karla's work in her book, Riding Between the Worlds, so I wanted to see for myself. And I was impressed. Karla has a great understanding of emotions, how to use them and move forward with them. Beautiful work. And I was glad to get this in CD's instead of reading it. I also bought The Art of Empathy and Emotional Genius. Yes, I duplicated some things!
Great book that has helped me tremendously with ironing out my emotions. The best part of this book is how she normalizes the "bad" emotions and helps you gain a more positive perspective on their function. I love my anger so much now because I know it helps me set my boundaries. I welcome my sadness with joy because I know it's there to help me let go of what's not serving me. I removed one star because it is a little long winded and written in a very methodical way. I enjoy things like this but it was hard to follow some of the analogies. I had to re-read certain parts a few times to understand what she was trying to say. I have the book and the audio version of this book and I've listened to certain parts multiple times, getting something new out of it every time. Thank you Karla!!!
The Language of Emotions is such great book. I had to keep my highlighter in my hand and ready to use while reading. Even on the few parts that I didn't quite agree with or understand, there was so much information that I not only learned from about but there was so much that resonated with me in many ways. I received a lot of confirmation and clarity on things that I believed or felt but didn't know how to quite verbalize. As a person who always feels and who has come to value and honor my emotions, I am grateful for the author for expanding my perspective about the beauty and depths of my feelings and how to truly flow into and with them for a deeper experience. This book will stay by bedside to use as a point of reference and I recommend it to all.
